FROM THE EDITOR’S PERCH
You are inspirational Several of the articles in this issue are the direct result of
traveling and meeting bird enthusiasts all around the world. Pamela Clark’s excellent article on hormonal behavior was a must have! At the recent Cockatoo Downs Positive Parrot Retreat Pamgave a great lecture on this topic. I think themost important take homemessage I got fromher lecture was that parrots are not always ready to reproduce. In actuality they are usually “switched off” when it comes to making babies. Check out the article to learn more.
A second feature in this issue is The Feather Distribution
Project. Author Catherine Vine and I (plus a few other bird folks) had the good fortune to see up close and personal just how important parrot feathers are to Pueblo Indians when we visited two Pueblos in NewMexico. It was truly an emo- tionallymoving day for us all.We all felt privileged to spend the day learning more about this incredibly culturally signif- icant project and its impact.
My article on raising and training a great companion par-
rot was inspired by my experiences working with Beni the blue throatedmacawandWrigley the double yellowheaded Amazon parrot that I trained for the Kaytee Learning Center. I recently visited this dynamic duo and was once again im-
pressed at how well trained they have remained thanks to their caregivers. They are an excellent example of what can happen when you start out right and continue following the positive reinforcement path.Yes, parrots can be great pets!
I was at the Kaytee Learning Center to teach a live workshop and webinar with avian veterinarian Dr Susan Clubb.
Both the live portion and the webinar were a big success. I really loved the chance to reach more folks with the webi- nar portion. But for those who could not attend, my latest DVD might be the right fit for you. The Basics of Training: A LiveWorkshop is a four hour, three disc set that includes one of my full day seminars. In addition to lecture, there are live training demos with birds I ammeeting for the first time and an extra special hilarious version of the training game. Visit the Good Bird Inc website to order a copy.
This issue’s “How Did They Train That?” feature was inspired by Cockatoo Downs Retreat participants Laura and
Brody. They are also the models in the photos. And of course Reader Success stories are always inspired by you, the reader. In this issue parrot lover Dot Schwarz shares her experience raising and training a rock pebbler.Yes, you are in- spirational! And in turn I hope these articles motivate you to have some training fun with your parrot.
Happy training!
